Parenting is not just about raising children; it's about raising ourselves, too.

As I often share with my psychology students at one of the nation's leading universities, parenting is as much about self-growth as it is about guiding our little ones. This became particularly evident during a classroom presentation on the advantages of being a parent.

The student's presentation was illuminating, but it was during the Q&A that a profound question was raised: "Is there a best time or age to have kids? How do you create the right mindset for yourself and your kids?" This question stayed with me, echoing many parents' and parent-to-be's concerns and uncertainties.

In my integrative wellness practice and academic career, I've found that the heart of effective parenting lies in mastering one's mindset. So, let's dive into five practical tips to help you do that.

1. Reflect on Your Childhood: Ask yourself, "What do I wish was different when I was a kid?" Our childhood experiences shape our parenting styles, often subconsciously. Recognizing and understanding these influences can empower us to make more conscious, positive choices in our parenting.
